Directed by Star Wars mastermind George Lucas, Mark Hamill brings to life one of cinema’s greatest heroes: Luke Skywalker. The son of Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, he grew up on Tatooine under the care of his uncle Owen Lars and his wife Beru – before eventually apprenticed to Master Yoda and becoming one of the greatest Jedi Masters in the galaxy. Yes, Skywalker is not only one of the first, but also one of the most popular characters in the entire ‘Star Wars’ cosmos – but he’s seen less glorious days too, as even actor Mark Hamill finds:
“I thought it was a mistake from the start,” revealed Hamill, pointing out the “The Star Wars holiday special” was addressed. So if, looking at the headline, you thought it might be a scene from Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi – many fans still get nightmares at the thought of Luke Skywalker, teats and green milk – you’re wrong. . Instead, the legendary and legendary-bad Christmas movie from the galaxy far, far away is meant. And that too is only too understandable.
The “Star Wars Holiday Special”: Nothing beats it!
James Gunn brought us “The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special” in 2022, inspired by the “Star Wars” idea. Aside from the title, the similarities are limited. The adventure of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista) and Co. is after all an entertaining and elaborately produced film, in which the makers have certainly come up with something. In any case, more than just anchoring a group of film heroes more deeply in the collective memory.
“I originally didn’t want to do it, but George did [Lucas] said it would help to keep “Star Wars” in mind. And I wanted to be a team player, so I did,” Hamill said in 2013 (). Also in attendance were Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and James Earl Jones, among others.
Besides, like Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia, who is famous for the song “Life Day” in the special, Hamill’s Skywalker should also get a musical number: “I didn’t think Luke would sing. So they canceled that song.
“We should not be ashamed”
At the same time, however, Hamill is well aware of the importance of the Christmas special, now celebrated by many as a charmingly evil cult: “I don’t think we should be ashamed. You should package it as a DVD extra. It shows how incredibly fallible we all are!”
In addition, the now 71-year-old does not fail to mention that the special is or was important in terms of content for the franchise: “It introduced Boba Fett in an animated series. So in that respect it is very relevant.”
This is what the Star Wars Holiday Special is all about: Wookiee Chewbacca is on his way home from battle to his planet Kashyyyk, where he and his family are celebrating Happy Life Day. He has sidekick Han Solo (Harrison Ford) at his side. Meanwhile, Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer circles Tatooine after the Millennium Falcon is sighted nearby. And finally, the Dark Lord has a score to settle with Han and Chewbacca…
