Born in Basel, André Fuchs (71) describes himself as a world traveler. Before retiring, he worked in marketing for many years and lived in New York, Paris, and Thailand, among other places. He returned to Switzerland with his Thai wife, Nathavi (54) for four years. “We returned to Switzerland because my family needed care. We lived with them in their eight-room villa and looked after my family until they died,” says André Fuchs. The villa for two was huge for the couple. “We just wanted to live in a small place and chose to spend the winter months in Thailand, where Nathawi grew up,” explains Fuchs. Therefore, the couple sold their parents’ villa in Allschwil BL and looked for a small plot of land for a mini house. “It was impossible to find anything in Basel at these crazy prices,” says her husband.
The couple was able to purchase 600 square meters of land in Grindel SO from a friend of Nathawi Fuchs and got the building permit for their tiny house without any problems. The total cost of the house and land amounted to CHF 300,000. The tiny house in Grindel was built in just one day. In case of transport, it can be disassembled and reassembled in a new location just as quickly. “We found a little gem here and we live beautifully at the edge of the forest, we have a creek and a garden in front of the house,” says André Fuchs.
Despite its rural location, the couple can quickly reach the city by car or public transport, or to nearby Laufen BL, which offers plenty of shopping. The active retiree realizes that Grindel himself has a good background. The mini house at the edge of the forest always attracts hikers and hikers, and the Fuchs couple is often spontaneously approached by those interested in the small modular house.
The tiny house of the Fuchs couple, with 40 square meters of living space, has a living room and bedroom, as well as a kitchen and bathroom. “We have a professional kitchen, a marble bathroom and a large closet at home. We don’t need more,” says Fuchs. André Fuchs says, in old age this kind of small life is already much better, because less space means less housework.
In front of the mini house, the couple also has a terrace under a party tent with a grill and pizza oven. “We spend most of our time outdoors. Farmers and neighbors from the area usually drop by themselves, like clubs. Then we grill and eat outside together. That’s how good friendships developed,” says social André Fuchs. In the garden, they sometimes sow with friends and everyone reaps what grows. Globetrotter Fuchs: “I’ve lived in many parts of the world, but I’ve never had such wonderful neighbors as in Grindel.”
