For many it is difficult to make a clear distinction between generations. Despite our age differences, the transition is still fluid, as we are not completely isolated from each other: Gen X and Y are close, and sometimes even the most stubborn Zoomer acts like the Boomers he despises.

The generational classification is therefore used as a simplification on which socio-cultural science – and above all marketing – is based. Here we present some differences. You can then take the test to find out which generation suits you best.

Baby Boomers, Generation X, Y or Z?

• There are historical or technological facts behind various definitions. According to Wikipedia, for example, baby boomers (1946−1964) was so named because the birth rate increased tremendously as a late result of the Second World War and literally exploded. The “creativity” of the generation is no secret: for them, work is high on the priority list!
• This generation x (1965−1980), often referred to as “Generation Golf” in German-speaking countries, strives for a good work-life balance rather than absolute job security, unlike baby boomers. This was certainly due to television, which became a mass medium in this period.
• This Generation Y (1981−1996), also known as millennialscharacterized by dreams of self-actualization and increased work-life integration. They are called millennials because they are the last generation to consciously see the turn of the millennium. Meanwhile, this age group makes up almost 50 percent of the worldwide workforce.
• Shortly before the turn of the millennium, Generation Z (1997−2012). Surrounded by gradual digitization, they are growing with the Internet, thus earning the nickname “Youtube Generation”. This generation is often ridiculed for holding many traditional views. There is no doubt that diversity is not a foreign word for him, but a necessity.
