Five is a magic number on the Ligurian coast. There are five picturesque villages, the Cinque Terre, made up of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Rainbow-colored houses cling to steep cliffs. They offer an exciting rugged coast, arts and culture, a wilderness park in the back, and the best food.
There are five modes of transport by which you can travel this part of the Ligurian coast: by car, train, ship, bicycle or on foot. All are recommended. The old Via Aurelia takes drivers through the “tempi passati” Liguria. Trains rattled across the water through a maze of tunnels. The most beautiful from the boat. Because it is difficult to reach colorful places by car.
My advice: Book a Boat and Breakfast. Then you always have the chocolate side of the seaside towns. Cycling is also fun. Some disused rail lines allow travel from one place to another. For example from Bonassola to Levanto. Both are attractive resorts. And the starting point to explore the famous villages.
Cinque Terre is also a hiker’s paradise. On the water (sometimes paid) or on a slope. Old roads pass through vineyards and olive groves. My favorite route: Corniglia via Volastra to Manarola. Incredible panoramic view.
Also worth a visit: west of the Cinque Terre, the famous town of Portofino. To the south are Porto Venere and the shopping destination La Spezia. Beautiful end of the tour: Tellaro.
In the 1970s, the east coast of the Italian Riviera was still seen as an insider tip. Today, the five villages of the Cinque Terre National Park, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso, are world-renowned for their extraordinary positions between rocks or cliffs, their intertwined and colorful houses and winding streets. The national park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for over 20 years, and since 1999 the marine reserve of the Cinque Terre has been part of Europe’s largest whale sanctuary. When the tourist flow decreases at the end of the summer season, the original character of the villages can be felt and experienced again.
