How to recognize and treat allergic asthma?

People who experience sneezing, wheezing and respiratory distress at the same time may be dealing with allergic asthma, which can affect their quality of life.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that more than 260 million people worldwide suffer from asthma.

He Allergic asthma It’s the most common type of asthma, and it’s triggered by environmental factors, says Ronald Purcell, an allergist and immunologist at the Cleveland Clinic.

“When your allergies are combined with asthma, it’s known as allergic asthma. This causes the airways to narrow every time an allergen is inhaled. Although there are many
All the different allergens that can trigger allergic asthma have one thing in common: they are found in the environment, not in food or medicine,” says Dr. Purcell.

Environmental allergies can include pet dander (dead skin cells), mites, cockroaches, mold and pollen.

“If pollen or mold is causing the condition, it may only appear seasonally. If it’s caused by pets or bed mites, symptoms can occur year-round,” she notes.

In the case of allergic asthma, a person will most likely have allergic rhinitis symptoms and pulmonary symptoms at the same time, Dr. Purcell continues to explain.

“Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, affects nose and sinuses and can cause symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, itchy nose and eyes. Asthma, on the other hand, affects
mainly to the lungs and can cause symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath or rapid breathing,” he adds.

In children, the symptoms of allergic asthma can be more subtle, the specialist points out.

“I can tell they’re too tired to play, but parents should check to see if they’re wheezing or coughing. If other kids are running around playing and your child wants to stay away,
you may have trouble breathing,” he explains via email.

The good news, Dr. Purcell says, is that current treatments for allergic asthma — mostly drugs and inhalers — are very effective. “They are relatively easy to make
use and have minimal side effects,” he says.
