More and more manufacturers are adding a sugar-free variety to their assortment. The health effects of sweeteners have hardly been studied.

Sugar-free substitutes are very popular! Soft drinks, desserts or ready meals – more and more manufacturers are expanding their assortment to include a sugar-free variant. Such products are often presented as particularly healthy in advertisements. The promise: No calories and no effect on blood sugar levels.

Its effects on the body are still almost unexplored. The first study of 120 test subjects now shows that artificial sweeteners are not as healthy as previously thought – they can make you fat and even damage DNA.

For the study, 120 subjects were divided into six groups. Four of the groups received multiple servings of sweetener over a period of several weeks, while the rest received regular sugar or no sugar at all. Saccharin, sucralose, aspartame and stevia were tested.

Saccharin and sucralose can make you fat

The result of the study: With all the sweeteners, there were changes in the subjects’ bodies. Two of the sweeteners tested were particularly negative: saccharin and sucralose. Although the portions were below the daily maximum, the researchers saw significant differences in the subjects’ guts.

Affected subjects were less able to digest sugar after the experiment – their glucose tolerance was impaired. The disorder is a precursor to type 2 diabetes and a risk factor for obesity. Researchers suspect that the cause of the disorder is the bacterial diversity that changes after consumption of sweeteners.

The study also showed that sucralose can damage DNA. Affected cells no longer function properly. This can lead to problems such as metabolic disorders or autoimmune diseases.

Not carcinogenic but still unhealthy

Artificial sweeteners have also been repeatedly suspected of being carcinogenic. But so far, researchers have been unable to show an increased risk. However, it is recommended that pregnant and nursing mothers do not consume artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, saccharin and aspartame.

It is recommended to abandon sugar substitutes in order to avoid a negative effect on the body. Instead, avoid eating sugar at all, if possible. After just a few days, the positive effects of doing without it can be felt. (jl)
