“External stimuli often help wake up faster,” says Helen Slawik, head of the Center for Sleep Medicine at the University of Basel Hospital. It can be music or the voice of a radio host. Whether you want to start the morning with the news right away is a matter of taste. If not, you can also set the clock radio to only turn on after the latest news of the day. Slawik says the smell of coffee can also be an external stimulus that wakes you up, or the joy of a morning activity like a good breakfast. Waking up from sleep for work or some other necessity is difficult for someone who wakes up with an uncomfortable attitude. “The best tip for people who can’t get out of bed well is to go to bed early enough in the morning to rest.”
Almost all modern alarm clocks have a snooze function. If you turn off the alarm, it will ring again after a short while. “If you delay, you lose” is an English pun. In English: “The sleeper loses.” Slawik says it’s actually inconvenient to use the snooze button. People who were in the habit of napping for an hour or more always came to him for advice. It is sometimes very difficult to break out of this mold. “It’s easiest for someone to wake you up temporarily.”
Daylight lamps are artificial light sources with the color temperature of daylight. They help against fatigue and seasonal depression. If you buy one, it’s best to place it at the recommended distance, but you don’t have to look directly at the light source. Slawik says that in the summer, natural brightness is usually sufficient. But during the darker times of the year, daylight lamps can help wake you up faster. “Exposing yourself to daylight in the morning has the greatest impact because some cells in the retina respond particularly strongly to light at that time.”
Distributing alarm clocks that ring as loudly as possible throughout the apartment is a tactic often used by those who have trouble getting out of bed. On the forums, some report that they just block out the noise. Sometimes the upstairs neighbor rings the doorbell because at least he can’t sleep again. Slawik says it’s very inconvenient to get used to something like this. Exposing yourself to such stress at the beginning of the day will no longer make you want to start the morning. Sleep phase alarm clocks, for example, are worn on the wrist in the form of a band or placed under the bed with a smartphone as an app. They measure heart rate and/or body movements and promise to use this data to wake the sleeper while they’re napping. It feels more pleasant than waking up from your sleep, Slawik says. But if you get enough and restful sleep at night, you’ll only get shallow sleep in the morning and therefore you don’t need a phased alarm clock. “Furthermore, such devices only make imprecise measurements.”
