It’s amazing that when it comes to star power, there are two films hitting theaters this week that should make filmmakers’ ears throb with excitement. The cast of the DC multiverse action movie “The Flash” alone reads like a best-of-cast list of the DC comic book movie adaptations: In addition to Ezra Miller as the hasty superhero The Flash, the movie features two Batman actors, Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton in the action comedy movie. In addition, Michael Shannon will also return as the dreaded Superman antagonist General Zod – and who knows, there may even be some cameo appearance from well-known stars…
But against Wes Anderson’s star lineup”Asteroid City‘ The cast list of ‘The Flash’ seems downright puny, because this is where the hottest Hollywood talents really step in:
Joining Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) in the retro sci-fi comedy is Jeffrey Wright (The Batman), Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore), Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Robbit), Margot Robbie (Barbie”), Tilda Swinton (“Constantine”) , Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”), Rupert Friend (“Homeland”), Hong Chau (“The Whale”), Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”), Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), Liev Schreiber (“Scream ), Edward Norton (“Fight Club”), Willem Dafoe (“The Card Counter”), Steve Carell (“Foxcatcher”), Jeff Goldblum (“Jurassic Park”), and Matt Dillon (“The House That Jack Built”) .
Will the movie be overwhelmed by its stars?
Incidentally, this is not uncommon for Wes Anderson’s work. The stars would like to work with the eccentric director and can also be used for a short performance. His previous films “The French Dispatch”, “Isle of Dogs – Atari’s Journey” and “Grand Budapest Hotel” already offered a similar star show.
Unfortunately, little seems to be done with the large star ensemble in “Asteroid City”, as our FILMSTARTS editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen lamented in his 2.5 star review:
“Once you’ve enjoyed the appearance of the next superstar, it’s usually over — even more so than in previous films, Anderson and his story co-creator Roman Coppola consistently refuse to give their audiences anything more than minimal snippets. That’s why most of the actors have next to nothing to do – and they’re there, of course, primarily to add another familiar name to the already obscenely prominent cast list on the poster and in the trailer. press.
Those who would like to see for themselves how well Wes Andersons staged his incredibly gargantuan cast in “Asteroid City” can do so in cinemas starting today, June 15, 2023.
