Many world sports associations, including the International Olympic Committee, are located in the “Maison du Sport International” office building. In other words, it was clear that the Olympic Museum would be opened in Lausanne in 1993. Since then, the exhibitions held on a total area of 3000 square meters have fascinated visitors. More than 1,500 exhibits tell the story of the Olympics from ancient times to the present. This is accompanied by a large park with sculptures representing the connection between art and movement. Audio-visual shows and interactive exhibits complete the experience. The Olympic Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 18:00 and is free for children up to the age of 15. The entrance fee for adults is 20 francs and includes use of the audio guide.

Anyone who is currently visiting the Olympic Museum should take a little more time to stroll through the beautiful neighborhood of Ouchy on the shores of Lake Geneva. The Quai d’Ouchy is a great place to stroll and relax. This pier was built in 1901 and connected the Haldimand Tower to the old port. In this part of the lake, which is about a kilometer long, there are at least three large Lausanne parks: Elysée, Olympic Park and Denantou. In the autumn, the walks here are particularly atmospheric, and in the summer temperatures, you should definitely pamper yourself with an ice cream at the cozy “Glaces Veneta” ice cream parlors. The sunsets on the shores of the gigantic Lake Geneva are almost never ending.

The Lausanne Reformed Church rises majestically above the city. The impressive Gothic building is one of the most important tourist magnets in the canton of Vaud, with around 400,000 visitors per year. In addition to the impressive interior of the church, which impresses above all with its bright color, it is worth climbing the bell tower for the more athletic visitors. There are 160 steps to climb and the effort is rewarded with stunning views of the city of Lausanne. Lausanne Cathedral has maintained a wonderful curiosity since the Middle Ages: every night until 10 pm. A respectable business following a 600-year-old tradition. For this reason, it is useful to listen to the night over Lausanne every hour.

A popular destination for city dwellers and families seeking peace and quiet, Park Sauvabelin is located just above the city of Lausanne. In just ten minutes from the city centre, you can reach this green paradise with even a small lake in its centre. However, the real highlight of the park is the Sauvabelin Tower. A spiral staircase of 302 steps leads to the viewing platform of this wooden tower built in 2003. From here, a 360-degree panorama opens up, stretching over the roofs of the city of Lausanne, Lake Geneva and, in good weather, to the Alps, Jura and Mittelland. The wood required for the construction of the tower comes from the surrounding forests. The aim was to set an example for the sustainable development of the city of Lausanne.

Just a few minutes’ walk from the train station in Lausanne, Plateforme 10, a new artists’ neighborhood, opened in June 2022 and brings together three cantonal art museums under one roof: Cantonal Art Museum (MCBA), Design Museum and Applied Contemporary Art ( Mudac) and the famous Photo Elysée. To immerse yourself in the art world at Plateforme 10, you now only need one ticket, giving access to all three museums for CHF 25. Admission is free even for visitors under the age of 26. And Plateforme 10 is more than just art: it’s a meeting place. Various restaurants, such as Nabi or Café Lumen, invite you to linger and browse the shops and bookstores while the skateboarders practice their skills at the new skate park in front of the modern building complex.

With its perfect location right on the shores of Lake Geneva, Lausanne is also an excellent starting point for a boat trip. Lac Léman, Central Europe’s largest inland lake, seems to have no shore. It is therefore not surprising that the term “Leman” from the Celts means “big water”. Round trip options from Lausanne-Ouchy are just as wide. For example, there are several culinary options, such as “lunch on the lake” or a tapas tour. But the vineyards of nearby Lavaux with its small villages can also be admired from the ship. The number of steamships operated by the Lake Geneva Shipping Company today is remarkable: a total of eight operate regularly, taking guests back to the Belle Epoque era and complementing the already spacious modern scheduled boats and numerous small ferries.

A city tour will make you hungry and thirsty. This is where Lausanne shows its diversity and charm once again. Because the city defies sweet, small and special places to stop by. There is Café Madeleine located in a bookstore. Or Scandinavian-style Bel-Air Coffee. Another insider tip for coffee lovers is Sleepy Bear. The coffee here is 100 percent homemade and roasted on site. True to its name, a cute bear adorns the latte art variations of the coffee on Rue du Simplon. Hotel Lausanne Palace’s Yogi Booster Spa Bar & Lounge offers special nourishment for the soul with its gastronomic concept based on healthy and detoxifying cuisine made from fresh produce.
