Full throttle: The most beautiful train journeys in the world

The Jacobite Steam Train made it big in the Harry Potter movies as the Hogwarts Express. Here, it wobbles over the Glenfinnan Viaduct across the Scottish Highlands.

Scotland: full throttle to the magic world

Who invented it? When it came to railways, the British were ahead of the curve. On September 27, 1825, the first steam train in history passed through the north of England, carrying coal, flour and people. Therefore, it goes without saying that the island has some of the most beautiful railroads in Europe. Some even take them to magical worlds: the steam train from Fort William to the seaside town of Mallaig can be seen as the Hogwarts Express in the “Harry Potter” movies. Officially known as the Jacobite Steam Train, the historic train rumbles through a picture-perfect Scottish landscape. The steel giant needs about two hours for 65 kilometers. After a two-hour break on the beach, you return to Fort William.

Trans-Siberian Railway: the longest road in the world

The Trans-Siberian Railway is the most famous and longest railway line. In the Pacific, it travels 9,288 kilometers from Moscow to Vladivostok. Pass 89 cities, 400 train stations, and vast birch forests (an alternative is to Beijing via Mongolia). The railway was built at the beginning of the 20th century to develop Siberian raw materials. Today it is still the most important west-east link for goods and passengers in Russia. A train leaves Moscow every two days and arrives in Vladivostok six days later. If you like authentic, you can stay in a normal bunk car. Some organizers offer luxury compartments with sightseeing.

Switzerland: top spot on the Glacier Express

From Zermatt to St. Moritz is regularly ranked in the top ten worldwide as the most beautiful train route in the world. The journey through the Valais and Graubünden mountains and the Rhine Valley may take just eight hours, but the panorama rivals any mountain range in the world. New this year is (even) more luxurious “Excellence Class”. This includes a guaranteed window seat, a five-course menu cooked on board, and a specialty bar. A concierge will also answer questions about the sights along the route.

Rovos Railroad: luxury throughout Africa

Although Rovos Rail from South Africa began its maiden voyage in 1987, the luxury train is also one of the great classics of African train experiences due to its timeless elegance. The cars date from 1911 to 1956 and shine in their former glory thanks to the renovation. Guests sleep in different suites: The most luxurious, the Royal Suite, even has its own bathtub. Apart from this, there are bar and lounge wagons, dining wagons, smoking lounge and panorama wagon. Rovos Rail enlivens the era of elegant research expeditions – so a dress code is mandatory when dining: jacket and tie for men, cocktail dress for women. Various routes are offered in South Africa and neighboring countries. The ultimate train experience is offered on the 15-day Pride of Africa tour from Cape Town via Botswana and Zambia to Dar as-Salam, Tanzania. If you want to hop on this train, you have to dig deep into your pocket: excursions, safaris and overnight stays in historic hotels are included in the proud price of at least 12,000 francs.

India: hustle and bustle on the rack railway

Traveling by train in India is as psychedelic as an LSD trip: the chaos, the colours, the noise, the encounters are out of this world. Travelers in the normal “Sleeper Class” experience the full spectrum of Indian life. Great experience! With 67,000 kilometers and around 23 million passengers a day, the dimensions of the Indian rail network are incredible. These include four spectacular mountain trails that Unesco has recognized as World Heritage Sites. These include the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the single rack railway in India. The steam train takes 290 minutes for 46 kilometers and an elevation difference of almost 2,000 meters – comfortable enough for you to enjoy the mountainous landscape of south India to the fullest.

Peru: by train up to 4780 meters

Henry Meiggs, who built the Lima-Huancayo railroad, is said to have said, “I can train anywhere a llama can go.” In the end, about 10,000 workers had to work for 40 years for the 332-kilometer route. They created one of the most impressive railway lines in South America and the second highest railway in the world (the highest in Tibet). The “high point” is in the village of La Galera, at 4,780 meters above sea level. Some travelers even suffer from altitude sickness. A nurse provides the guests with oxygen. During the 10 to 14 hour journey (delays are common), you can enjoy dance performances on the train, snowy Andes peaks, and countless llamas outside the windows. The train runs only once or twice a month (ask on time!) – a special feature celebrated with a marching band on departures and arrivals.

California Zephyr: across the US

The west of America was conquered by covered wagons and, from the 1860s, railroads. However, trains no longer play a role as a means of transport. The daily connection from Chicago to San Francisco is even more surprising. The California Zephyr sneaks across the prairie, Grand Canyon, and desert for 52 hours. However, traveling in a sleeper (there are also cheaper seats) is a gap in the travel budget of over $1000.
