‘Flamin’ Hot’, Eva Longoria’s directorial debut

“Flamin’ Hot,” a film based on the story behind the invention of the famous hot snacks ‘Cheetos’ and marking Eva Longoria’s directorial debut, arrived this Friday on the streaming platform Disney+.

A movie starring actors Jesse Garcia and Annie Gonzalez, takes the form of a biographical account of Richard Montañez, a Californian businessman from Mexico who claims to be the inventor of this version of the famous cornmeal cheese-flavored ‘snacks’.

“It was a pleasure to work with her. (Eva Longoria) because it is very intelligent and precise, but, above all, it allows you to have a lot of fun shooting,” revealed González in an interview with EFE before the launch.

Montañez’s story is popularly known among the Hispanic community California but its veracity was questioned in a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation.

The story that Montañez sought to convey –and from which the cord is powered- is based on his alleged rise from janitor at a Frito-Lay plant in Rancho Cucamonga (San Bernardino, California) to head of multicultural marketing over the idea of angry ‘Cheetos’.

With more or less dose of reality, “Flamin’ Hot” narrates the life of a businessman from a perspective that pays little attention to specific data and focuses on emotional moments that, at times, explicitly exceed the level of dreams.

“It was very difficult to play richard in this movie because it is shown in four different decades. It was fun to accept this challenge, but there was also a lot of hard work behind it all,” Garcia told EFE.

Both interpreters agreed with this reading the script -co-author Lydia Ivette Chávez-they knew they wanted to participate in this project that also shows the situations of exclusion of Latin Americans in the United States and how many of them are still forced to develop less skilled and lower paid jobs.

“This is the story of my friends, my relatives… From the principle we wanted go work at ‘Flamin’ Hot,'” they claimed.

This film is Longoria’s first feature film film maker after almost a decade of directing series and other television products behind the camera.

However, outside of the format change, which is the majority makes even the actress proud, As he revealed in another interview with EFE, it is that “almost the entire work team” was Latin American and it is a “demonstration of great talent” that this community values.
