If you want to go on vacation with your dog, there are few things you need to think about more than traditional vacation planning. Of course, the four-legged friend’s journey should be as short and enjoyable as possible.

It is recommended to come by car. This allows you to stop as often as possible or as long as needed. The dog can stretch its paws, do its job and breathe fresh air. You will also sit in the car with the dog, which will relieve his excitement.

Vacation with a dog – what should you consider beforehand?

Finding the right hotel or accommodation is also important. Here, too, not every hotel allows four-legged guests. If dogs are allowed and you’ve inquired about the surcharge, you should also check out how dog-friendly the accommodation is.

Are the garden and terrace properly fenced, are there personalized feed options and, above all, is the environment suitable? There should be walking paths in the immediate vicinity of the accommodation. Perfect if the dog beach can be reached on foot as well. Dogs are not accepted on every beach, whether by the sea or by the lake.

Where to find the most beautiful beaches for you and your dog

• North: There are wonderful hostels, hotels and holiday homes on the Baltic and North Seas, where you can spend wonderful days with your family and four-legged friends. Also many shops are within walking distance so you can shop for daily necessities for people and animals. Just in case, good veterinarians can always be found in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

• in the south: Italy has great dog beaches, both on Lake Garda and on the sea. A popular destination for vacationers with dogs in Italy is the Italian Adriatic coast. Travel destinations are easy to reach by car and have several dog beaches. In Lignano, for example, there is a private dog beach with separate plots and two small public dog beaches. Important: Most dogs are not allowed on the beach during the summer season, especially in southern Italy.

• Balkans: Also recommended in Croatia. Here, on the shore, you will find numerous campsites where dogs are always welcome. On the mainland, as well as on the Croatian islands, there are many wild beaches where you and your four-legged friends will feel comfortable.

Tips and information for holidays with pets

Get the latest information before every trip. In Italy there is a general muzzle requirement, in Denmark dogs must be on a leash. But regulations are constantly changing. You should also learn about the travel arrangements back to Switzerland. Depending on the destination country, this can be problematic.

Papers: A pet passport is required to cross the border. A medical certificate and/or other formalities may also be required.

Health: A valid rabies vaccine is usually required. Parasite treatments or blood tests may also be a case.

Danger: Blood analyzes and related documentation can take several weeks to generate.
