Also in Swiss supermarkets: Foodwatch looks for brazen advertising lies

class=”sc-29f61514-0 kHgAwW”>

The list includes overpriced and misleading products.

This time, the contenders include a Philadelphia cream cheese, miniature baking chips from Pom-Bear, a milk drink advertised as a meal from the Yfood company, baked rolls from the manufacturer Mondelez, and porridge from the 3 Bears venture.

From Thursday until the end of June, consumers can vote for candidates at www.goldener-windbeutel.de. Foodwatch honors the Golden Cream Puff for the twelfth time.

Fine print and hidden price increase at Mondelez

Producer Mondelez has been nominated twice. One of the candidates is Goat Cheese and Rosemary Philadelphia, which Foodwatch believes its packaging gives the impression of a goat cheese product. In reality, it is a cream cheese made from three percent goat cream cheese and flavored cow’s milk. However, this is not on the ingredient list, only in lowercase, Foodwatch complains.

The candidate for Bake Rolls also comes from Mondelez – here the manufacturer changed the brand of bread chips from 7 days to Tuc, increased the price and reduced the contents of the package. This results in a hidden price increase of about 139 percent, criticizing the consumer protection organization.

sugar instead of fat

Intersnack manufacturer’s Pom-Bär mini ovens also made it to the list. These were aimed at children and advertised “50 percent less fat”—but the chips contained six times more sugar than traditional Pom-Bear chips. Snacks “shouldn’t even be advertised to children,” according to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, according to Foodwatch.

expensive oatmeal

The accusation of porridge from 3 Bears revolves around the fact that the manufacturer finally took a lot of effort to advertise regular pure oat flakes and set a price of just under four euros for 400 grams. This means that oat flakes are six times more expensive than supermarkets’ own brands. The “no added sugars or artificial additives” note is ultimately natural to pure oatmeal.

Milk advertised as food

Smooth Vanilla, Yfood’s milk drink, which is advertised as a healthy and nutritious meal with plenty of protein, fiber and vitamins, was also nominated. It says “This is Food” on the packaging. Foodwatch’s review: “Actually, just water and milk with a few added vitamins, minerals and sweeteners – very expensive at 3.99 euros.”

manufacturers explain themselves

Compared to “Spiegel Online”, three out of four producers commented on their nomination. Mondelez pointed out that in cream cheese, the design makes the product easier to recognize and advised consumers to review the ingredient list. In the case of bread chips, it was said that it is up to the food retailer or online retailer to set the final consumer prices.

Intersnack referred to a different manufacturing process for the chips’ high sugar content. Startup Yfood described their prices as fair. Manufacturer 3 Bears did not comment on the portal.
