According to previous forecasts “Spider-Man: About the Spider-Verse‘ topped the North American box office charts by a wide margin, earning $120.5 million in its opening weekend. In second place is Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” with $40.6 million – about a third of the total (albeit in its second week).
Several comparisons show how excellent the result of “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” is: an early prediction, which was considered optimistic anyway, that the film could bring in $ 100 million, was once again clearly surpassed. But most of all the US box office result of the predecessor was multiplied: Spider-Man: A New Universe premiered at the US box office in late 2018 for just $35.5 million.
Only One Movie Started 2023 More Successfully Than “Across The Spider-Verse”
“Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” also succeeds in this way the second best start of all of 2023 at the US box office. Only “The Super Mario Bros movie‘, which started with $146 million, was more successful. Already in the opening weekend, ie in just a handful of days, more than half of the total box office of the predecessor was achieved worldwide: so far there is $ 208.6 million on the credit side, “Spider-Man: A New Universe” totaled $384 million worldwide.
The positive response to the videos is cited as the main reason. “Spider-Man: A New Universe” was so remarkable that many who only discovered it after its theatrical release were eager to see the sequel straight to the big screen. This was certainly the case after enthusiastic reactions from critics and audiences concluded that the sequel is as good or even better than its predecessor.
Here at FILMSTARTS.de there are also excellent 4.5 stars for the second part. The ratings on our site are a very good 4.16 stars. And that is also the opinion on most of the internet. There are 95 percent positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes or average ratings of 9.1 (out of 10) and 4.7 (out of 5) in the public vote on IMDb and letterboxd.
Also number 1 in the cinema charts in Germany
Created in Germany “Spider-Man – Across the Spider-Verse” with just under 200,000 movie tickets sold also (here just ahead of “Arielle” with 175,000) jumped to the top of the charts. At first glance, this number of moviegoers is not an exceptionally good result as in the US.
However, if you consider that animated films that are not primarily aimed at children with their parents still have a very difficult time in this country and that the beautiful summer weather once again depressed moviegoers, the number is still quite high. This is also illustrated here by the comparison with the predecessor “Spider-Man: A New Universe”: it started with 67,000 visitors* and ended with almost 400,000.
