There were several dozen people who gathered in Carrera de San Jerónimo with yellow signs and banners. In addition, there are calls to “protect pensions by law” and in the “Constitution”, “restore the value of pensions” and to remind that “who rules, he rules, pensions are protected”.

But that is not the only claim the organizations are making. In addition to this equalization of the minimum wage to 1,080 euros, they also call for the application of effective measures regarding retirement, such as eradicating the gender gap in retirement and “immediate” auditing of social security accounts.

Regarding revaluation of pensions is concerned, pensioners demand that it be done according to the actual CPI and they also demand the “repeal” of pension cuts and the penalization of pensioners with long contributions. Ultimately, they demand that public money be banned from financing private business plans.

pension reform

It was two months ago when the House of Commons confirmed the ordinance that included the reform of the pension system led by the minister Jose Luis Escrivawith the broad support of 179 votes in favor, the rejection of PP and Ciudadanos and the abstention of Vox and EH Bildu.

The intention of this reform, which came to the Congress with the approval of the European Commission and also the trade unions, is to increase the revenues of the public system in order to face the financial tensions that the gradual withdrawal of retirement baby boomers in the 30s and 40s.

Although the Government agreed with EH Bildu to increase widow’s pensions to bring them on par with the minimum, the reform does not bring this minimum pension on par with SMI, which caused Basque independent MPs to abstain in the vote.
