The labor reform shortens the duration of the contract to a minimum: only 51 days

Author: A. Perez Meka | EUROPAPRESS

One in three contracts in April lasted less than a month, 20% barely lasted a week, and more than half were temporary

The labor reform that came into force a little over a year ago He suddenly changed the employment model in Spain, to the extent that he managed to solve one of the endemic problems of the labor market in record time: the reduction of temporary employment to historically low levels. And this reduction has reached the point where only 14?% of current jobs are have a shelf life (less than half of the number before the reform)while 86?% are undefined.

However, there are two shadows in this data. The first is that although 86?% of workers have a permanent contract, this does not mean that it is stable, as many of the new contracts that are signed are permanent and therefore do not work all year round, while others are part-time. but also, another direct and unintended effect of the labor reform is that the duration of the contract is significantly reduced.

Moreover, the average duration during the first quarter of this year is the lowest since 2006 at 51 days, which represents a decrease of almost 10?% compared to last year, a reduction due to contract rotation, according to a report published yesterday by the Adecco Group Institute together with the Cuatrecasas Institute.

If only data for the month of April is taken into account, the average duration of initial contracts also decreased to 45 days, which is 9.4?% less than in March and 4?% less than in April 2022.

Every third contract

In the past month, every third contract lasted for a maximum of one month, and every fifth (21.5?%) for a maximum of a week. Actually, Another effect of labor reform It is a matter of a decrease in the number of contracts, given that the prevailing ones are indefinite and practically prohibiting temporary ones, they were reduced by more than 11?% to 1.11 million in April. Of these, 626,779 were temporary, 16.6?% less than a year ago, while permanent ones fell by 4.4?% to 490,266.

This means that 56.1?% of the initially signed contracts were temporary, which is the lowest level reached in the last few years, while 43.9?% were permanent, of which 36.9?% were discontinuous fixed, in this case to the maximum.
