Didier Rodríguez set a new 3,000m hurdles record at the May National Athletics Championships held last weekend at the Rommel Fernández Stadium track with a time of 8:47.67.
The record was 39 years old until Rodríguez himself managed to break it last year with 08:54:61.
“A new national record in the distance of 3000 meters with obstacles, I thank and praise God for the achieved result. I am satisfied with what I achieved in the first race of the year, but not satisfied, because I know that great things are coming. I also want to thank all the people who made this possible, Rodríguez said.
Rodríguez, who trains in Paipa, Colombia, also recently equaled the 5,000m record set by Simón Álvarado in 1986 at the Ibero-American Athletics Championships in Havana, Cuba, where he completed the distance in 14 minutes 27 seconds 45 hundredths. The athlete from Colón was two seconds away from breaking Álvarado’s record yesterday by registering 14.27.57
Anel Acosta and Francisco Gutiérrez won the silver and bronze medals in the 5000 meter race. In the women’s 5,000, Ángela Ferris won the gold medal, and Iris Camarena won gold and silver.
Another silver medalist in E Nacional Mayor last Saturday was José Uribiades Cedeño in the 10,000m flat test with an unofficial record of 31:34. This medal is historic for the province of Los Santos.
Chamar “El Torpedo” Chambers, won the gold in the 800 meters race, the gold medal without any major problems, the silver went to Rogelio Ashburn, and the third to Mario Gálvez.
