The carbon neutral certification process included an external and independent verification by Aenor of all sales of Naturcell pasta in 2012, which is produced at the Lourizán factory. For this purpose, in addition to the implementation of activities aimed at reducing emissions in the plant itself, the company compensated its remaining emissions through emission reduction certificates (CERs).
Since 2018, Ence has been conducting an analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the company’s activities in its facilities and main products, and has also developed the necessary tools to update its carbon footprint calculations, with the aim of designing initiatives and focused products on decarbonisation.
It is in this line, for example, in 2020 pioneer in its sector by analyzing the ecological profile of its products, based on the ecological declarations of the products. «This is a program for ecological declarations based on the ISO 14.025 standard, not to identify or report the environmental impacts of products, in this case Naturcell cellulose, based on life cycle analysis». The latter consists of a study of the environmental impacts of the product during its life cycle in twelve categories, including the use of fossil fuels and the emission and absorption of biogenic and fossil carbon dioxide. “In this way, the company not only seeks to develop products with characteristic sustainability attributes, but also seeks to objectively and impartially confirm these attributes,” remember in Ence.
Naturcell cellulose is the first carbon-neutral product produced by Ence from unbleached cellulose with an improved environmental impact. It stands out with its own “high standards of sustainability” as they are “lower consumption of wood, non-renewable raw materials, water and energy in the production process and lower carbon footprint, among other things”.
Ence reminds that it is a question of promoting products based on this class of cellulose sustainable alternative to plastic, “represents a clear example of circular bioeconomy and ecological transition towards a new model of consumption through natural, renewable, biodegradable and versatile fibers”.
Ence confirms that with this Aenor certification of Naturcell’s carbon neutrality, “The company demonstrates or fulfills two priority areas of activity: climate actions and development of sustainable productspaving the way for the continued development of products with a carbon neutral effect”.
