MEF establishes the Technical Committee for Climate Change

Pursuant to one of the mandates inserted in the Strategic Plan of the National Government, Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF)installed the Technical Committee for Climate Change at the Head Office.

The committee is headed by v Deputy Minister of Economy, Enelda Medrano de González.

Installation of said Boardit will enable the development of a long-term strategy, in order to create, incorporate and make visible a culture of climate support, emphasized Medrano.

For his part, the Director of Investment Programming of MEF i coordinator before the pre-appointed Committee, Mateo Castillero He stated that the action carried out by the institution leads to the creation of a structure for public investment projects to consider the aspects of climate change occurring in the country.

He added that it was projects would not only be subject to environmental impact studiesbut to a more exhaustive analysis that includes some types of accidents that occur in certain regions, causing impacts on investments in the national territory.

He explained that when it comes to climate change, all the institutions that have investment projects and public or private sector entities associated with the financing of these projects, including banks and insurance companies.

Castillero stated, “It is important to emphasize that the strategies implemented within MEFthey are aimed at accessing cheaper long-term sources or loans, as a financial platform for Panama”.

Similarly, Minister of the Environment, Milciades Concepciónhe pointed out that the MEF, as an entity responsible for public finances, is embedded as a leader in environmental protection and climate change issues, which represents a historic day for Panama.
