MIDA cautious with Acodec investigation of mills

He minister of Agricultural development, Augusto Valderrama He was careful in his comments about the investigations he was conducting Directorate for Consumer Protection and Defense of Market Competition (Acodeco) for the alleged monopolistic practices by mills in Panama.

Valderrama assures that he learned from the media about the court proceedings that Acodeco conducted last week in the facilities of 13 rice factories and the association that brings them together.

It is about an administrative investigation that officially started last year from National Administration for Free Market Competitionbefore the alleged commission of an absolute monopolistic practice, consisting of price coordination and restrictions on the production, distribution or commercialization of first-class rice.

The evidence collected at this stage undergoes a careful legal and economic analysis by the research team, in order to determine whether it is necessary to expand it or to conclude whether or not there is enough evidence to initiate a lawsuit before the courts.

Each economic entity involved could be fined up to one million balbos, Acodeco warned.

Valderrama limited himself to repeating the support he received from Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) is offered to rice producers against the increase in production costs.

MIDA is providing funds to pay at least $25 million to growers to guarantee planting beginning in the middle and end of this year, the official said.

The government has increased support to guarantee production, the head of agricultural development insisted at a meeting in the Agriculture Committee of the National Assembly where together with producers they discussed issues related to the execution, control and preservation of the Free Trade Agreement with the USA.

Various producers expressed their opinions and disagreements, and explained how the agricultural sector is affected as a result of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The minister was also present at the meeting Augusto Valderrama from MIDA and representatives of MICI, IDIAP, ACODECO, ISA and APA.
