The CEO of CaixaBank claims that it is “incorrect” to judge the company by its results

Gortázar assures that the 3.145 million in profits that the bank achieved in 2022 “are not bulky results at all, but reasonable at best”

Chief Executive Officer of CaixaBank, Gonzalo Gortázar, considered that judging the company according to the overall results, in relation to the EUR 3.145 million profit that the bank made in 2022, it is “simply incorrect”, since this profit “the fruit of his own resources” and he denied that it was “massive” earningsbut that they are “reasonable”.

«Note about those 3.145 million. This is a good result, but our resources are 33,000 million, so the results are 10% of these own resources. Thereforethese are not bulky results at all, but reasonable at best». transmitted during the CEDE working breakfast held this Wednesday in Madrid.

“Judging a company by overall results is simply wrong. The results are more or less high depending on one’s own resources,” he said. In doing so, he referred to the Government’s justification of “extraordinary benefits” that it used from July last year to start applying a temporary tax to banks faced with an increase in interest rates by the European Central Bank (ECB).

On the other hand, Gortázar expressed satisfaction with the integration with Bankija, which was closed in a year and a half, “shorter term than usual” for bank mergers and for the largest one done in Spain. “We have the best financial position in the last 15 years in terms of liquidity, solvency, credit quality and provisions,” he defended himself.

In the end, he pointed out that the sector and its subject are going through a “moment of transition” in terms of digitalization, where customer segments are “very different” from each other.. He estimated the number of CaixaBank clients at 2.7 million —out of 20.2 million clients that the entity has in total— who only go to the branch, without any other means of communication with the bank, some users who are “very important”.

In this way, he reiterated his entity’s commitment to providing services to the elderly, as well as to rural areas, where it provides services to almost 2,500 municipalities directly and about 300 via ofibus. In addition, in 476 localities it is the only unit. “It is our obligation to approach all of them,” he said.
