Millions of Instagram accounts banned due to outage

Due to a malfunction in Instagram, many users cannot access their account. Upon opening the app, they receive a message that their profile has been immediately banned for violating the platform’s rules. The American news site The Verge estimates that millions of users are unable to access their profiles because of this.

The users don’t understand why their account got banned because they say they didn’t break any rules at all. Complaints about this are shared on Twitter using the hashtag #instagramdown.

Instagram confirms via a Twitter message that the company is receiving reports of the outage. “We are investigating,” writes Instagram, which belongs to the parent company Meta.

In the Netherlands, too, users seem to have problems with the app. The website allestoringen.nl saw a peak around 3pm this afternoon. A spokesman for Meta in the Netherlands says the company is still investigating the cause of the malfunction.

How long the outage will last is unclear. Some reporters tweeted that they now have access to their account again.
