From 2035, new cars in the EU will no longer be allowed to emit CO2

From 2035 all cars sold in the European Union must be CO2-free. To this end, an agreement was reached in Brussels between negotiators from the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Member States.

The agreement applies to passenger cars and small commercial vehicles. By 2035, the emission targets for passenger cars are to be revised further downwards to zero by 2035. This means that cars that run on fossil fuels will no longer be allowed to be sold from this point on.

clarity

According to negotiator and MEP Jan Huitema (VVD), the agreement means clarity for both the car industry and drivers. “Industry is being encouraged to invest in fossil-free cars, and there are more options, and therefore cheaper, for drivers who want to drive cleaner.”

EU Commissioner Frans Timmermans describes the agreement as a strong signal. He points out that the European car manufacturers have already shown in recent years that they are on the right track and can achieve the ambitious goals of this agreement.
