The Chamber of Mines celebrates the host of the mine visit program

The Chamber of Mines of Panama (CAMIPA) describes the government’s coordinated visits to the Donoso mine as an important step forward in creating a better understanding of the industry, its commitment to environmental protection, community progress and development from Panama.

According to the union, this is a key process for citizen participation, transparency and informed discussion about mining activities in the country.

“Panama’s mining industry has an unwavering commitment to transparency, community participation and informed conversation about the sector, which is why we consider this ministry announcement an important step forward,” said Roberto Cuevas, president of CAMIPA.

According to the data of the Chamber, Panama is among the 6 countries in the region that have the Standard of Mining Sustainable – TSM, a strict program, recognized as the best in the world.

This establishes the parameters according to which the sector must act in order to manage the environmental and social challenges of its activity, having responsibility, transparency and credibility as pillars.

In this sense, the initiative will allow Panamanians to learn first-hand about the reality of the sector and encourage informed conversations about mining, for better decision-making in the situation in which the country currently finds itself.

CAMIPA points out that this program opens doors for create new opportunities for sustainable tourism for the Donos area.

“Panama has great geological potential to connect the world with the minerals needed for the energy transition; At the same time, it has enormous potential to provide thousands of jobs and the resources needed to fill social gaps in the interior of the country, at a time when the economic outlook is uncertain for all Panamanians,” Cuevas emphasized.

On Thursday, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Jorge Rivera, met with the directors of Minera Panamá to address the issue of the visit to Cobra Panamá and the inspection of the mine’s prevention and safe management plan.

The minister explained that it is the national government that will coordinate and determine these monitoring visits, in accordance with the Plan for the orderly and final closure of the mine, It is the company that has to carry them out based on government guidelines.
