As an introduction to the season, Panama Water Resources Authority (Arab) conducted a hydroacoustic survey of small pelagics to update information on their biology in national waters.

The Arab Research and Development Department is in charge of identifying the location of these species and discovering a greater number of them, which seen throughout the Gulf of Panamabecause they are coastal and shallow.

Katiusca Dixon, Arab biologisthe explained that the hydroacoustic measurement serves to estimate the maximum catch of the year to leave the stock, inventory or population of anchovy, herring and orquet for the next generation and the growth of the species.

In Panama only 20 industrial vessels are allowedespecially for small pelagic fishing and 10 craft boats.’

A technical team from Peru, non-governmental organizations and companies dedicated to small-scale pelagic fisheries are helping with the study.

Fishmeal is mainly intended for export to the poultry industry in the United States.

In 2022, small pelagic fishing reached 67,175 tons metric, and the heavy year closed the season with 84,201 metric tons, an increase of 25.3%.
