The Super Bowl is coming: Let the show begin!

Two hundred million viewers; seven million dollars for 30 seconds of advertising; $16.5 billion spent on food, drink and decor; 1.230 million liters of beer drunk… the numbers of the so-called “Super Sunday” are almost infinite and grow every year.

The party has evolved into a kind of national holiday that gathers family and friends in front of the television and drives consumption to levels that surpass the mere Thanksgiving day.

According to data from National Retail Federation (NRF), every American spent an additional $85 on Super Bowl day shopping in 2023; More than 100 million people attended a meeting or party for the game, and nearly 18 million watched it in bars or restaurants.

The Super Bowl broadcasts occupy the first places in the list of the most watched television programs in the United States. In 2023, it reached an average audience of 113 million viewers – 200 million watched a minute of the game, according to Nielsen Holdings -. Slightly less than 2015, the most viewed in history with an average of 114.4 million.

With that kind of influence, it’s no surprise that the ads aired during the game are the most expensive of the year this time around Seven million dollars in 30 seconds – the first, in 1967, cost 42,500.

Advertisers often take the opportunity to create spaces that are memorable. This is the case that Apple made in 1984 when it introduced its first Mac, directed by Ridley Scott, and inspired by ‘1984’, a dystopia written by George Orwell.

A bit of history.

First Super Bowlas Latin America is known superbowl, It was played in 1967 after the two American football leagues of the time, the National Football League (NFL) and the American Football League (AFL), arranged a match between their winners to determine the “world champion”.

In 1970, the NFL absorbed the AFL and two conferences, national and American. Since then, the winner has won the Vince Lombardi Trophy, in honor of the coach of the first team to win the Super Bowl, the Wisconsin Green Bay Packers, who died the same year.

Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots Currently, there are two teams with the most titles, six each, and the Patriots are also the ones who have played in the finals the most times, eleven times.

Legendary quarterback Tom Brady, who retired last year, leads the individual record with seven rings in his possession (six for the Patriots and one for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers). Charles Haley follows with five. Brady is also the one who has been voted MVP (player of the match) the most times, five times.

Bill Belichick with 6 wins, all with the Patriots, is the most successful coach. Twenty of the league’s 32 franchises have won the Super Bowl at some point, and only four have never qualified for the final game – the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Legendary concerts.

The performance that takes place every year during the break is an event with its own life that can generate as much or more interest than the sporting event itself.

Honors in 2024 go to American rapper Usher, who will celebrate his 30 years of successful career and pay tribute to African-American culture. Usher already performed in the 2011 edition, then as an accompanist Black Eyed Peas.

The half-time show was born to entertain the visitors at the stadium and for several decades remained in the discreet background, but today it is an event that has worldwide diffusion and enormous influence. Sample: Rihanna’s 2023 concert generated a 640% increase in her Spotify streams.

The last coup happened in 1993 with Michael Jackson, whose performance gathered more spectators than the game.

Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Prince, Madonna, Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan, The Who, Beyonce, Enrique Iglesias, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lady Gaga, Jennifer López and Shakira…the list of celebrities who have walked through the Super Bowl is endless.

Usher’s concert will not be the only one of the day. Before the game, there will be a show in which singers Post Malone, Reba McEntire and Andra Day will perform, and right before the start, country singer Reba McEntire will be the protagonist of another always emotional moment, the interpretation of the national anthem in the stadium.
