The New York Jets release Dalvin Cook to the NFL

The New York Jets on Tuesday released Dalvin Cook, a four-time Pro Bowl running back who could be looking to add to one of the teams that will compete in the 2023 NFL playoffs.

Cook joined the Jets last summer to play out the 2023 season in exchange for $5.8 million, a team where he rushed for 214 yards on 67 carries, the lowest average of his career.

The numbers were disappointing for Robert Saleh’s team as the Opa-locka, Florida native arrived in New York after four straight 1,000-yard seasons.

The 28-year-old running back, who came to the NFL as a second-round draft pick in 2017 by the Minnesota Vikings, impressed with his performance in the 2019 season, in which he totaled 1,135 yards and 13 touchdowns; In 2020, he had 1,557 yards and 16 touchdowns, the most of his career.

In the 2021 campaign, he amassed 1,159 yards and six touchdowns; and in 2022 he had 1,173 yards and eight touchdowns, numbers that earned him four consecutive NFL All-Star Game selections.

Parting ways with Cook and the Jets was a mutual agreement that would allow the team to preserve part of the player’s deal and open the door for the running back to sign with one of the teams that would advance to the playoffs en route to Super Bowl LVIII.

The team from New York planned to assemble a powerful team that would take them to the postseason after not making it since the 2010 season.

The planning fell apart in Week 1, in which star quarterback Aaron Rodgers ruptured his Achilles tendon, an injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Without Rodgers at the controls, the Jets offense didn’t work. The team has just six wins and 10 losses through Week 17 of the season, numbers that keep it out of contention for a playoff spot. They will close the campaign next Sunday with a visit to the Patriots, who have also already been eliminated.

This will be the thirteenth consecutive season that the New York Jets have not qualified for the postseason; That’s the longest active streak in the NFL.
