ARAP inspects vessels to prevent illegal fishing

Panama has inspected national flag vessels in international service in countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas with the aim of combating illegal fishing.

Between September and December of this year, the Water Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP), through the Directorate of Inspection, Supervision and Control, carried out inspections in various ports in countries such as Suriname, Philippines, Thailand, Korea, China, Cameroon, Ghana, Congo and Japan.

With supervision, ARAP tries to ensure that there are effective inspection controls on national-flagged fishing vessels in international service.

This obligation of the country is in accordance with ADM/ARAP resolution no. 033 of June 20, 2023, which establishes the requirements for implementation landing operationsfor fishing vessels and related activities.

It is also part of the monitoring of the regulations, in which the conditions that need to be fulfilled are repeated and confirmed, through Technical Circular no. 061-2023, published last August.

With the inspection controls of international vessels sailing under the Panamanian flag carried out by ARAP employees, ties of cooperation and communication between the mentioned countries on continents such as America, Asia and Africa have been strengthened.

As a result of these meetings, it was pointed out that in relation to ports in the Philippines, Thailand, Korea, China and Ghana, the exchange of information was achieved with port and fishing authorities.

This refers to the controls they maintain with the process of entering and unloading products from vessels in their ports.

Likewise, ARAP, through the Directorate for Inspection, Supervision and Control, points out that it has implemented control and monitoring measures over the fleets it maintains, in addition to the review, in order to implement all the necessary requirements and those policies that apply to fishing vessels.

This made it possible to maintain fluid and direct communication and exchange of information in the ports of the countries visited.
