Cobre Panama seeks termination of 4,000 labor contracts

The company Cobre Panamá reported this Friday that it has requested the termination of at least 4,000 of its associates’ contracts.

According to the mining company, the decision comes after a ruling on unconstitutionality and an official announcement by the Ministry of Trade and Industry instructing the completion of metal mining and processing operations.

A few days ago, the Ministry of Labor and Development rejected requests for the suspension of the contract, stressing that termination is appropriate.

Labor Minister Doris Zapata indicated that the voluntary retirement plan proposed by the company, which is nothing more than a collective agreement, must respect all workers’ rights and benefits that correspond to the law.

The workers’ union emphasized that they will remain vigilant so that those affected get a fair settlement.
