The Chamber of Commerce calls for an action plan; predict hard days

Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP) he warned this Sunday that difficult days are ahead and warned that there is a gap in information regarding the action plans, following the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice that declared the contract with Minera Panamá unconstitutional.

According to Adolfo Fábrega, president of CCIAP, it is necessary to quickly take a series of steps and processes that will establish the foundations for the implementation of an orderly and responsible closure of mining operations in the Donoso district.

To answer the challenge, Fábrega urgently recommends the formation of a multisectoral technical committeeled by individuals of recognized credibility and supported by various civil groups.

He added that this commission must implement a process in which a comprehensive action plan is defined ecological aspects, legal and economic. Furthermore, it is considered essential that it has the appropriate legitimacy for its decisions to be binding.

“We are faced with a highly technical issue that must be resolved seriously and quickly. This issue must be organized within a few days so that the country quickly has a clear path as to what should happen,” he added.

The businessman also advocates togetherness. Faced with this, he believes that it is crucial to prevent society from turning in circles and the outcome being an ecological disaster or illegal exploitation of the area, as has happened in other countries.

Apart from the issue of mining, Fábrega stressed that a recovery plan must be considered for the affected economic sectors, as well as for students who experienced delays and damaged international reputation of the country.

He also called for the need to create a plan to prepare for the potential loss of investment grade and its future recovery.

In this sense, he reminded that, although street closures are a valid means of expressing dissatisfaction, they also threaten the country’s economy.

“Difficult times are coming and the frequent use of this tool will only lead us as a country to ruin. This is what various hidden agendas follow, so as citizens we must generally recognize that this will only bring misfortune. We are witnessing the way in which alternatives to demonstrations and protests,” he commented.
