The savings bank closed the accounts of Suntracs leaders

General Secretary of the Unified Construction Workers Union, Saul Mendezhe discovered that the Savings Bank had also closed the personal accounts of Suntrac leaders, including himself.

“We will confront the Savings Bank, which has now ordered the closure of the personal accounts of Suntracs directors and leaders,” commented Méndez.

For Méndez, these events, plus the threat of discounts for teachers, are repression promoted by the economic sector to create the conditions for the imposition of judgment Supreme Court of Justiceon claims of unconstitutionality of mining contracts.

In this sense, a complaint against the government of Panama due to the closure of 18 bank accounts of Suntracs and other personal accounts of the leaders of that union was submitted to the International Labor Organization (ILO), for violating the freedom of association.

The complaint was forwarded to Gilbert Houngbo, Director General of the Geneva-based ILO.

The note shows that the Savings Bank cited administrative reasons, but that the government leaks hints about irregular movements funds related to the financing of terrorist actions, which is false and defamatory.

Suntracs claims that Cortiz’s government violated Conventions 87 and 89 on freedom of association and the right to organize.

Meanwhile, union leader Nelva Reyes announced that a protest will be held today in front of the Ministry of Labor to deliver a message questioning the arbitrary banking measures against Suntracs.

The savings bank remained silent and only limited itself to informing that it always acts strictly in accordance with the laws and regulations of Panama.

He added that in accordance with subject to banking rules and regulations maintain reserve and confidentiality.

Suntracs defended the legality of its funds and attributed the situation to persecution by the government of Laurentino Cortiz.
