Pig farmers are predicting a glut of pigs from January

The President of the Association of Pig Breeders of Panama (Anapor), Juan Guevara, pointed out this Tuesday that they have coverage for this year placing your products on the private marketHowever, they are worried about the surplus that will be realized from January.

According to Guevara, at the beginning of 2024, there will be a saturation of products of pig origin.

We are concerned about market saturation after January and industry reaction,” Guevara commented.

In this sense, Guevara said that if there is no government participation to cover the saturation that will occur from January to May, they will have difficulties in survival related to commercialization.

The pig farmer emphasized that they started the year with a surplus, but since May they have made an agreement with the industry. At the government level, manufacturers They agreed on a program of a thousand pigs, but they only reached 132 pigs by June, which is what they still owe.

He also explained that for this year’s prosciutto, pig farmers have already made their contribution, so private farms will produce what they plan to sell.

“That’s the difference A Panamanian who has money will be the one who can buy prosciutto, will no longer be given away. “The industry will set a price for that,” he added.

In Guevara’s opinion, complaints related to winning the sympathy of the population by delivering free prosciutto damaged the transparency of the program.

Aggressive fair program
Augusto Valderrama, the minister of agricultural development, pointed out that after the abolition of Christmas Solidarity, there will be no problems for producers because they already have a place to house the pigs.

“We understand that they have a need to satisfy the local market. They preferred to distribute the products they intended to deliver to us in the local market with traders. “Oversupply analysis is not on the radar,” he said.

Next Monday, a meeting is planned between the manufacturer and representatives of MIDA to discuss this issue.

Furthermore, Valderrama commented that if there is a saturation of the product, the state will acquire it for sale at free fairs, as it has already done.

“Any surplus that exists will be bought because the free trade fairs are getting stronger. A more aggressive fair program will start from January,” said the head of MIDA.
