Trawling sparked controversy after it was allowed in the country

Last Monday provisions of the new law on fisheries, sanctioned in 2021But after extensive discussion, trawling has already created a ‘buzz’ on social networks.

In Article 17 of Executive Decree 13 of November 1, 2013, which elaborates on issues related to fisheries used for large-scale fisheries Trawl fishing is allowed for shrimp, prawns, bighead shrimp, sea shrimp and shrimp.

This particular point caused a reaction on social networks, without citing the source, which points out how trawling is prohibited in Costa Rica due to the negative impact on marine ecosystems.

This modality, used by the fishing industry, consists of cast a wide net on the sea floor from where it pulls all species in its path.

This publication qualifies the measure as ‘another goal of the Executive Committee’ and asks if the Minister of Agricultural Development (Mida), Augusto Valderrama, knows what he signed.

Executive order It bears the signature of Valderrama and President Laurentin Cortiz.

This media used information from Costa Rica, where protests by environmental organizations were held in May, after Rodrigo Chaves’s government approved the purported investigation to reactivate the industry.

On the other hand, the report of the scientific journal of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, an advisory body of the European Union, published in July of this year, and reproduced on the digital medium La Voz de Galicia, shows that currently “There seems to be no economically viable alternative to catching large quantities of flatfish”.

This debate extends to various parts of the world. The European Union allows this type of fishingbut those who oppose it state that it exterminates fish and flora from marine systems.

A publication in Sol de Tampico (Mexico) dated March 25 of this year describes it in detail Fishermen who practice this do not distinguish between species or sizes, not caring about the viability of the species. and the families they belong to.

Panama América spoke with one of the leaders of artisanal fishermen, who stated that they are in that discussion and that they will hold a meeting about it this Thursday.

He announced that after reaching a consensus at tomorrow’s meeting, he will make statements on that topic.
