Sick leave is increasing again, mainly because of flu symptoms and corona. This is according to figures from Arboned, one of the largest occupational health and safety services in the Netherlands.

In September, absenteeism was 4.3 percent, 0.3 percent higher than in August. The increase is usual for this time of year, but due to the tight labor market, this increase is difficult for many companies.

Absenteeism is higher in large companies than in small companies. However, due to increasing absenteeism, the smaller companies are coming under even greater pressure. “A baker will have more problems than a large company because he has more space to store things,” says Van Wijngaarden.

Absences are highest in education, public administration and health care: around 5.7 percent.

According to Arboned, in addition to flu and corona, mental health problems are also a reason for increasing absenteeism due to illness. This, combined with the staff shortage, makes it necessary for people to remain vigilant and continue to follow basic advice, says Van Wijngaarden.

For example, he proposes reintroducing the “snot-nosed protocol,” which makes it clear when you come to work and when you don’t. “If you have a cold or are ill, you can also work from home. After all, it is important to pay close attention to each other as an employer and also as an employee in order to avoid unnecessary absenteeism,” says Van Wijngaarden.
