Union of Mineworkers of Panama (beats) He expressed concern about the situation in the country and was cautious about the possibility of losing a source of employment.
The union assures that due to the uncertain perspective regarding the new mining contract, it sees the stability of jobs as threatened.
“We reject every decision, initiative or action of any sector or state body that intends to close our source of employment and which tries to deny our future with one blow,” they warned in a statement.
In this sense, they point out that closing the mine would leave them at the mercy of the banks, with debts they could not face.
“Gentlemen from the Association of Banks, please note that you will be one of the sectors that will suffer the most damage because we will not be able to meet obligations such as mortgages or cars”, they added.
Utramipa emphasizes the contribution they make every day as part of “the most successful and important industry in the country”.
As for the closing of the streets, the union condemns that its colleagues are victims of intimidation and extortion by the protesters.
They also warned that the country would suffer serious damage if the mining agreement was declared unconstitutional.
“The country would be exposed to the serious risks that would imply billion dollars in damages, which could even lead to the bankruptcy of the state,” they stated.
Faced with this panorama, the workers declared a permanent sit-in and vigil to defend, as far as the consequences allow, their future and existence, together with their families.
