Panama has performed well among its female athletes so far at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
So far, the Isthmus team has won five medals at the Pan American Games, which officially opened on October 20, divided into one silver, three bronze, all in the women’s division, and another bronze in the men’s.
The only silver medal so far in the Isthmus national team was won by Atheyna Bylon in the -75 kilogram category.
Although Bylon claimed he was fighting for the gold, he has the satisfaction of earning a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics along with the silver medal.
Carolena Carstens in taekwondo also won bronze and brought Panama its first medal in Santiago 2023, in the -57 kilogram category.
Carstens, who first participated in the Pan American Games at the age of 14, added that this is his fourth appearance at these competitions and that he is on the podium for the first time at these regional games.
It’s Carstens’ first medal at the Pan American Games and that’s because he never gave up in the preparation for the competition.
For its part, judo once again gives pleasure to Panama at the Pan American Games, this time with Kristina Jiménez who, as in Lima 2019 (Peru), climbs the podium again with bronze.
At the 2019 Santiago Games, Jiménez won bronze in the -57 kilogram category.
Judoka Veraguense also won bronze at the 2019 Lima Games, but in the -52 kilogram category.
“I felt strong and focused,” said Jiménez, whose main goal is to qualify for Paris 2024, which would be her second Olympics.
The second bronze medal in judo in Chile is Lilian Cordones in the category up to 52 kilograms.
The only male medal was won by Eduardo Beckford in the -71 kilogram category.
