ARAP and the fisheries sector are reviewing the provisions of the Fisheries Act

The Water Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP)headed by its general manager, Yarelis Martínez Moreno and his technical team, together with representatives of the artisanal and industrial fishing sector, held working groups for the purpose of discussing and reviewing drafts of special regulations of the new Law on Fisheries 204 of March 18, 2021.

The discussions, which were held from October 2 to 4, aimed to determine specific measures for each of the fisheries that are developing in our country, such as: artisanal fishing, longline fishing, small pelagic fishing, trawling, cojinúa and fishing on internal waters.

The drafts of special regulations, generated during the working day, will be reviewed and adjusted according to the comments and recommendations of the technical team of ARAP and the fisheries sector.

It is important to emphasize that the vision of ARAP and the artisanal and industrial fishing sector is the development of sustainable and responsible fishing with an ecosystem approach.

Law on Fisheries 204 of March 18, 2021 Its purpose is to regulate fishing activities, aquaculture, related activities and activities related to fishing with the aim that they are carried out in a sustainable manner, with appropriate methods that ensure the preservation, reproduction, production, renewal and sustainability of water resources and fishing and/or aquaculture activities, for the well-being of current and future generations.

It also has a goal manage and promote the sustainable use of aquaculture and fisheries resourcesas well as supporting and facilitating scientific and technological research in fisheries, aquaculture and related activities.

Furthermore, it establishes and defines the principles for to organize, promote and regulate the comprehensive management and sustainable use of fisheries and aquaculturewith regard to social, economic, technological, production, biological and ecological aspects.

Likewise, it includes promotional measures that promote and guarantee economic investments in terms of competitiveness, both at the local level and in exports in fisheries, aquaculture, related activities and activities related to fisheries.
