Ministers of Agriculture of America will meet at Costa Rica from October 3 to 5 to analyze solutions to the most pressing challenges facing agriculture in areas such as food security, climate change and water resources.
The Conference of Agriculture Ministers of North and South America 2023which will be held at the headquarters of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), will be attended by high national authorities and international organizations, academics and representatives of the manufacturing and industrial sectors.
IICA reported this Friday that the inauguration ceremony is scheduled to be attended by the President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves; the one from Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali; and that from Panama, Laurentino Cortizo; as well as messages from the Secretary General Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro; and the Minister of Environmental Protection United Arab Emirates -the country that will host COP 28 this year-, Marian Almheiri.
The main topics to be discussed at the meeting will be Social Inclusion and Family Farming, Mitigation and Adaptation climate change, water crisis, incorporation of technology digital, science finance and research applied to agriculture and international trade.
Michael Kremer, Nobel Prize for Economics 2019 and a promoter of digital agriculture as a tool for poverty alleviation, will lead a discussion titled “Bridging Gaps in Innovation, Science, Technology and Digital Agriculture”.
Furthermore, scientist Rattan Lal, World Food Prize 2020will talk about how to increase climate finance and the opportunities it offers for agriculture.
The event will also hold a forum on how to get involved family farming and vulnerable groups in development, and the other on Agricultural Health in agri-food systems.
Other activities will be a round table on financing food security and sustainable development, discussions on the implementation of the Initiative Hemispheric Water and Agriculture” of IICAas well as other panels to discuss the perspectives of agriculture and rural development in America, and public-private articulation for the transformation of agri-food systems.
As part of the ministerial conference, there will also be a session of vl Inter-American Board of Agriculture (IABA), which is the highest governing body of IICA and is made up of the institute’s 34 member states.
In addition, during the event, ministers will discuss the continent’s participation in the following United Nations Conference on climate change (COP 28), which is scheduled for the end of this year in Dubai and where the IICA will set up a pavilion called the “House of Sustainable Agriculture of the Americas”.
