The goal of selling electric cars is 300 units in 2023

By August of this year, 243 100% electric vehicles were purchased, which already exceeds the 160 that were purchased last year.

Of the number reported in 2023, the highest number of sales occurred during the month of August, with 57, a record. Other months with positive sales were recorded in March (35) and June (37).

The Ministry of Energy records the movement of this type of car since 2015. From that year to a total of 532 were sold in the first eight months of 2023.

Following these figures, the institution’s expectations point to reaching 300 units of 100% electric cars sold annually in Panama.

On the other hand, the data shows that the sales for this year of plug-in hybrid cars amounted to 28, and of simple hybrids to 602.

According to experts, the country is not yet at the stage where the client properly knows these vehicles, because although there are very educated customers, doubts about their functioning are still in the majority.

In this sense, the main concern or ignorance revolves around where they can charge, avoiding running out of battery in the middle of the street.

Ligia Castro, Director of Climate Change at MiAmbiente, recognized that the uncertainty surrounding charging stations highlights doubts when deciding to use these vehicles.

“We will need it strategic positions throughout the country for all types of vehicles and that this energy is photovoltaic, which becomes a great investment opportunity for the private sector. The challenge is to remain carbon negative, and for that electric mobility is key,” Castro said earlier.

MiAmbiente is currently switching to electric mobility with its institutional fleet at its headquarters.

There are about 50 companies in this field in Panama, including workshops, equipment dealers and distributors.

Experts emphasize that electric vehicles are quieter, faster, but in terms of safety They are good and equal to the traditional ones.
