Leader Saul Mendez He emphasized that the minimum wage in Panama must be in line with the high cost of living.
Méndez’s statements come after a table was set up this week that will revise the country’s new minimum wage.
The leader of the United Construction Workers’ Union (Suntracs) pointed out that studies show that the salary that employees should receive in order to meet their needs without problems is more than a thousand dollars.
“The cost of living in Panama is beyond the planet. Studies show it a minimum wage of more than $1,500 is required meet living expenses. Those studies were two years ago,” said Mendez.
According to trade unionists, key aspects such as the prices of electricity, food, medicine and fuel have gone up, bringing the figure to over $1,500 now.
On the other hand, Temístocles Rosas, president of Apedeo, emphasized that he does not understand the basis on which such proposals are based.
He added that talking about the salary and figures is disproportionate and reflective ignorance of the economic conditions operating in the country.
“There will be studies inside the table to see which ones is the most competitive salary within the market. In case it is decided (to adapt) it is measured and does not affect current jobs,” he said.
The National Commission for the Minimum Wage consists of the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Agricultural Development, the National Council for Private Enterprise (CoNEP) and the Chamber of Construction Companies, the National Council of Organized Workers (Conato) and the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of unity (Conusi).
This three-member commission will analyze “how the economy is, according to indicators in each of the provinces, the cost of living, the situation in the labor market and the finances of the country” in order to define the new wage rate that will prevail from next January 1, 2024.
