Doctor who abused gymnasts stabbed in prison

Former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, Convicted of sexually abusing hundreds of underage athletes, he was stabbed in the Coleman II federal prison in Florida, NBC News reports.

The US Bureau of Prisons confirmed to EFE that an inmate was stabbed in that federal prison on Sunday, but for privacy reasons it cannot give the victim’s name.

Nassar, an employee union leader at Coleman II prison in west central California, told NBC News. Floridahe was stabbed andn neck, chest and back and suffered a collapsed lung as a result.

Joe Rojas, president of the Local 506 union, said he was in stable condition.

Lawrence Gerard Nassar, 59, who is scheduled to be released from prison in 2068, according to his prison file, worked as a doctor for the US gymnastics team for 18 years and he also worked at the University of Michigan.

He was sentenced in several trials in 2017 and 2018 to prison sentences that are equal to life imprisonment, for sexually abusing minor athletes and possessing child pornography.

In 2022, several US Olympic gymnasts, including medalist Simone Biles, sought more than $1 billion in damages FBI for failing to arrest Larry Nassar.

Earlier, in April 2022, 13 alleged victims of Nassar’s abuse sought $130 million from the FBI for failing to investigate allegations of sexual abuse against the doctor.

In 2013, the United States Gymnastics Association notified a federal agency that three athletes had come forward saying they had been abused by Nassar, but the FBI decided not to pursue a formal investigation.

The doctor was arrested in 2016 following an investigation by Michigan State University police, where Nassar practiced medicine.

In May 2018, the university agreed to pay $500 million in damages to more than 300 women who have accused Nassar of abuse.

In December 2021, the gymnasts also reached a $380 million settlement with the federation and the US Olympic Committee.
