It is often directed towards youth unemployment (22.4%) as the main challenge labor market spanish. However, while the number of unemployed between the ages of 16 and 29 has been decreasing in recent years, there is a growing concern for the unemployed over the age of 55 (11.4%).
IN Galicia, this group doubled within a decade. In 2013, only 9% of the unemployed were over 55 years old. Currently, that percentage rises to 18% (24,500 people). And the most discouraging thing is that almost half of them have no confidence in returning to the labor market, according to Adecco Foundation in its 15th report on the employability of gifted older adults, released this Tuesday. it is more 43% did not even have the opportunity to go to a job interview in the last year. All this reinforces the belief that if an employee is fired after the age of 55, he will only wait for a pension.
A journey through the desert where he will encounter numerous obstacles. The majority of those affected (92%) admit that they do coverage of immediate basic costs is your main concern. And that is that unemployment at that age leads to greater economic stress, if it is taken into account that there is a greater chance of falling into long-term unemployment, and thus the termination of unemployment benefits and available savings.
Another concern that these older unemployed people have is not being able to quote enough to be able to access pensions convenient in the moment retirement.
In most cases, these unemployed people over the age of 55 feel discriminated against because of their age when it comes to going through selection processes in companies. They reject the cliché that the older they are, the more demands they make before hiring them. In fact, nine out of ten would be willing to change the sector in order to work and eight out of ten would accept a job below their qualifications.
“This is a contradiction that urgently needs to be reversed if we want our welfare state to be sustainable over time. We have senior experts who are at the peak of their careers, with enormous abilities and whose contribution is essential to the country’s competitiveness. It is not acceptable that his unemployment becomes chronic to the extent that he directly deals with pension,” said the General Director of the Adecco Foundation, Francisco Mesonero.
