Six hundred Galician SMEs turn to Amazon to sell their products

Last year, they exported 30 million euros

More than 15,000 small and medium-sized businesses use Amazon, a large showcase of online sales, in order to develop their business through this channel, according to the data contained in the new edition of the Report on the impact of Amazon on Spanish small and medium-sized enterprises. In just one year, another two thousand companies joined the multinational company expand your sales channels, which contributed to the increase in the number of products sold. As a result, SMEs present on the Seattle (USA)-based platform’s store sold more than 100 million products in 2022. 15% more compared to the year before, which also allowed them to deliver their items to customers around the world, reaching exports of 950 million euros, 10% more than in 2021. Figures that also affected employment, since around 35,000 people were specifically hired by these companies to manage their business on the line described in the report.

In the ranking of autonomous communities with the largest number of companies that sell through Amazon support, Galicia ranks well, sixth out of the top ten. More than 600 Galician companies have chosen the multinational to develop their digital business. Catalonia leads the list, where more than 3,300 companies use Amazon to sell, followed by Madrid (3,000), the Community of Valencia (2,500), Andalusia (2,200) and Castilla-La Mancha, which is the equivalent of Galicia.

By export volume, too the Galician community is among the ten most expansive, from the national group, since together with Castilla-La Mancha, the Principality of Asturias and Murcia, small and medium-sized enterprises exported a value of more than 30 million euros. Although in terms of volume and population, Madrid and Barcelona make up a high percentage both in the number of companies present on the platform and in the scope of business, 60% of the companies that chose a large online supermarket to expand their market come from the rest of the Spanish province.

In terms of sales outside the national territory, the EU is the main destination market for products sold especially by Spanish SMEs France, Germany and Italy. They are followed by the United States and the United Kingdom in this ranking. Products for the home, personal care, toys, beauty and sports are the most exported product categories.

The interest of small businesses and Amazon is mutual. Namely, the importance that this segment of activity represents in the calculation of the American giant comes from these independent sellers» whose typology is multigenerational family businesses, businesses run by women or innovative entrepreneurs who have created their own brands, as well as artisans who sell their handmade products.
