Spanish employees, the fourth least committed in Europe

Author: DC

Almost four out of ten suffer stress at work every day, and many come home angry

The two main complaints that Spanish businessmen often make are that there is a lack of skilled workers and that many of those who are active lack the motivation to work. And, according to statistics, this second appreciation is fulfilled in our country: nine out of ten workers admit that they are not committed to their work. This is the fourth largest number in Europe.

This is revealed by the annual report of the consulting firm Gallup Labor situation in Spain 2023 in which experts warn that “the situation is worrying”, since “work commitment is a key factor for worker well-being and performance”. The document lists some of the reasons why people go to work with such apathy: impossible hours, insufficient wages and tension at work.

Two out of ten employees (20%) say that they feel angry at work every day, compared to the European average of 14%. There are only nine countries where people go to work in the worst mood. And much of the blame lies in the pressure the company puts on them. In fact, nearly four in ten (36%) say they feel stressed every day. However, there is another key factor that affects the discomfort of Spanish employees: lack of opportunities and better job prospects.

Of the 38 countries analyzed in the study, there are only two where workers have less hope than the Spanish when it comes to finding a better job. Only 26% believe they could improve their situation. «Spain has a fairly centralized and hierarchical style of governance. There are few opportunities for discussion and employee participation. Most of them work for small and medium-sized companies, which have a less professional approach to management,” explains Gallup consultant Pablo Diego Rosell.

The report hits the nail on the head and reminds Spanish entrepreneurs that they labor market national “not particularly dynamic” and that the number of “good jobs” is low, “with high levels of tension and job insecurity”.

For all these reasons, her experts recommend that companies address job insecurity and “promote a healthy and motivating work environment.” As? Along with improving wages and hours, promoting a business culture “based on trust and respect.”
