Who took Tina Turner’s real name – and what it was like

The real name of the owner of eight Grammy Awards is Anna May Bullock (yes, if she had kept it, she would have been the namesake of the famous actress Sandra Bullock).

As a teenager, Anna moved with her mother and sister to St. Louis, where she encountered rhythm and blues and at the same time the musician who plays such music, Ike Turner.

She first saw Ike Turner perform with his band The Kings of Rhythm at the Manhattan Club on East St. Louis. Bullock was amazed by his talent, recalling that she “almost went into a trance” watching him perform. She asked Turner to let her sing in his band, he said he would call her, but he never did. Anna took matters into her own hands – literally. At another concert, she took the microphone and sang during the break. When Ike heard her vocals, he invited her to collaborate. He only insisted on changing his name.

At first, the future star performed under the pseudonym Little Ann (“Little Ann”), but when it became clear that the singer had a great future, Ike suggested that she change her name to “Tina Turner”. And he even renamed his group the “Ike and Tina Turner Review.”

In 1962, Tina and Hayk got married, but the marriage was terrible – soon the man began to turn into a domestic tyrant. As a result, the singer ran away from him – only 36 cents remained in her memory, which she then had in her pocket, and a sonorous name, after which the whole world was striving at that time.
