The new film “The Little Mermaid”, another adaptation of Andersen’s fairy tale, will not be released on the world’s screens until May 24, but it has been discussed for a long time. At first, many were outraged by the fact that the Little Mermaid was portrayed by a black actress, Halle Bailey. But now it turns out that the casting directors’ choice couldn’t have been random at all!
One of the critics, who had already seen the film at a press screening, said that the film has clear parallels with Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton. Moreover, in The Little Mermaid there is a rather offensive attack on the latter.
One scene in particular feels quite literal.
“Ariel sacrificed her voice to get to the surface and meet Prince Eric. He can’t speak, so he tries to guess her name. His first guess is Diana. His second guess is Katherine, but after Ariel reacts in disgust to the name, he concludes, “OK, definitely not Katherine,” the Page Six critic said.
He also noted that there was nothing in the film’s internal logic to explain the mermaid’s reaction. Needless to say, Diana is the name of Prince Harry’s late mother, while Katherine is the full name of his sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales, also known as Kate Middleton. The dispute between her and Megan repeatedly became the subject of publications in the tabloids.
The most direct comparison between the heroes of the film and Megan and Harry is also obvious: The Little Mermaid in the new version has dark skin, while Prince Eric is white.
Well, the most interesting thing is that in her infamous 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Markle herself said that she identifies with the Little Mermaid.
She recalled watching the 1989 animated classic during a tumultuous time in her life after marrying Harry in 2018.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, she’s falling in love with a prince and she’s losing her voice because of it,'” Markle said at the time, suggesting she faced pressure from the palace and was unable to talk about it. .
