Berkley could have become a classical dancer and model, but eventually she was drawn to the cinema. The breakthrough for the young actress was the role of Nomi Malone in the movie Showgirls. Oh, what a stir Verhoeven’s stripper film caused! Critics tore it apart and were outraged by the amount of foul language and nudity on screen. The tape received the insulting Golden Raspberry award, with the remark that it is the worst film of the 90s. But audiences voted in dollars: Showgirls became the top-grossing film in the NC-17 rental category.
The undisputed star of the tape was Berkeley – and by the way, even Jim Jarmusch praised her acting work there. In general, the actress declared herself. Her next career began to add up quite successfully: the very next year she played in the First Wives Club with Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton, Woody Allen and Oliver Stone invited her to their films.
But starting in 2000, the actress began to act less and less, and the films looked more and more. What is Berkeley doing today?
At first, the actress focused on family. Back in 2003, she married artist and actor Greg Lauren, and in 2012 they had a son, Sky.
Second, Elizabeth found herself in other pursuits. The actress founded a program to help teenage girls and wrote a book, worked as a volunteer, founded her own production company. Berkeley has also been a vegetarian for many years and actively promotes this lifestyle. In 1997, she starred in a PETA campaign wearing a cabbage leaf dress to encourage people to embrace vegetarianism.
But in recent years, the actress has clearly been aiming for a career restart. Her latest promising projects include the series Idol with Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd.
