Laima was born into a simple Soviet family. Her father Stanislav Vaikulis was a laborer and her mother Yanina worked as a saleswoman. Although none of the relatives were associated with art, Lyme displayed art from childhood. She liked to sing and dance, but after school she still chose a more practical profession – she went to medical school.
And yet she couldn’t do without music. It is known that the future pop star began her career in the Latvian variety show Juras Perle, then entered GITIS and began to work as a singer without interrupting her studies.
Soon the first hits appeared in her repertoire – “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Charlie” and a remake of the song “Yellow Leaves”. In the 90s, the Latvian singer’s career also went up – a new wave of popularity was ensured by the hits “I was to Piccadilly” and “Acapulco”.
Today, Laima rarely performs and cannot please the audience with new hits. In recent years, the artist has been known not so much for musical achievements as for political statements. In her native Latvia, Vaikule organized a festival to support young musicians.
There were also rumors in the press that the singer had a recurrence of oncological disease – back in the 90s, Lyme was fighting breast cancer and after treatment in the USA he was able to beat the disease. But in the summer of 2022, pictures of the artist with a short haircut and a scarf began to appear on the network, after which many decided that she was undergoing chemotherapy again. Vaikule did not comment on the rumours, but admitted that she has health problems and called for prayers for her.
Laima does not have children, but she does not suffer from loneliness and often spends time in the company of her friend Alla Pugacheva and her family, and also continues to go on stage and meet her fans, who, as before, are waiting for their favorite hits.
