A representative of the British royal family touched the gaps of the homeless on the eve of Red Nose Day. It is a spring celebration of humor held every two years in the United Kingdom to show support for the disadvantaged. People put on red clown noses and organize thousands of charity events.
Prince William starred in the short film Groundswell which aired on BBC One. He spoke with podcasters Miles and Naushin, who have experienced homelessness firsthand. The heir to the throne said he couldn’t wait to understand their experience of living hard on the streets with nowhere to sleep. Kate Middleton’s husband recalled that Princess Diana took him to shelters at a young age to show him real life outside the palace.
“My mom introduced me to homelessness from a very young age and I’m very glad she did,” William said. The eldest son of King Charles III. expressed his regret that 25 years after Diana Spencer’s death in a car crash, the problem she fought so hard against has still not been resolved.
“I think she would be disappointed that we still haven’t moved further in terms of tackling and preventing homelessness. So she took an interest in it and got involved in the work,” said the Prince of Wales.
The monarch has promised to make homelessness in the UK a key priority of his public work. Especially as Britain faces a cost of living crisis and more and more people fall below the poverty line.
Prince William and Kate Middleton have three children – Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4. The heir to the throne said that he and his wife regularly talk to their children about the problems of homelessness, telling them that there are people nearby, who do not have a roof over their heads, reports the Daily Mail.
“Homelessness is a lack of safe space, it’s a very isolated life. You exist, you don’t live. I’m here to learn a little bit more and hear stories about your experience of being homeless,” William told show hosts Miles and Naushin.
