17-year-old Princess Leonor trades in a flower girl’s dress for a khaki military outfit. After completing her studies at the Welsh College, the monarch’s daughter is due to enter three years of service – first completing a course at the academy, then serving a year aboard the barque Juan Sebastian de Elcano and completing a “young fighter course” at the Main Air Force Academy.

Why doesn’t the princess go to a European university, but to the service? It’s all about tradition. Leonor, as the eldest daughter, is the heir to the Spanish throne and the future Queen of Spain, and all monarchs are required to receive a military education – a path her father and her grandfather took.

“As in all parliamentary monarchies, the successor to the throne must have a military background and a military career,” commented Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles on this information.

Of course, service can be a test for a 17-year-old girl, but Leonor is already used to discipline and independence. In Wales, she lived in an ordinary student dormitory like all students and did not enjoy any privileges. In addition, Leonor has long been independently involved in various events and fulfilling her royal duties.
